Roses are Red, Violets are Blue

What pre 1914 love poems do you recommend?

I have to write a piece of coursework comparing a pre1914 poem with another piece of poetry, i'd like to do a love poem but i cant find any that i really like, i'd like one preferably where the language isn't so old i don't have to spend 5 minutes deciphering one line and one that isn't shakespeare, i've looked quite hard but don't seem to be able to find anything i particularly like, it has to be an British writer.

  1. "To His Coy Mistress" by Andrew Marvell (1621-1678)
  2. Rupert Brooke was writing around that time and wrote at least one famous poem about love. He wrote Retrospect and The Great Lover to name but two. Similarly, DH Lawrence wrote poems as well as books; he wrote: Rose of all the World
  3. AQA? i really liked the song of the old mother with Simon Armitage's November.

  5. Not sure of the date he wrote it, although Yeats died in the 1930's, but my favourite is Aedh wishes for the cloths of heaven Had I the heaven's embroidered cloths, Enwrought with golden and silver light, The blue and the dim and the dark cloths Of night and light and the half-light, I would spread the cloths under your feet: But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams. William Butler Yeats
